Product Description

Compact 9-60V to 24V 20A 30A 40A 480W 720W 960W Non-isolated Regulator DC to DC Converter for Low Noise Operation

Features

DC/DC converter is a voltage converter which can effectively output fixed voltage after converting input voltage. DC/DC converters are divided into three categories: Boost type, boost & buck type, and buck type. Three kinds of control can be adopted according to the demand. PWM control type has high efficiency and good output voltage ripple and noise. PFM control type has the advantage of low power consumption even if it is used for a long time, especially under small load. PFM control is implemented when PWM/PFM converts to small load, and it is automatically converted to PWM control when heavy load occurs. At present, DC-DC converters are widely used in mobile phones, MP3, digital cameras, portable media players and other products. It belongs to chopper circuit in the classification of circuit types.

Technical Description & Application Guide

01. Standard Protections: All buck-boost and step-up/step-down products come standard with output overcurrent protection, output short-circuit protection, input undervoltage protection, and chip overheating protection (large power products have over-temperature protection on the casing, generally around 90°C).
02. Step-up Limits: Due to circuit structure, step-up series products do not have output short-circuit protection. Please add appropriate fuses at the input end.
03. Premium Shells: The gold-colored small aluminum casing is high-temperature resistant and suitable for outdoor high-demand applications.
04. Encapsulation: All hard gel encapsulation products cannot be repaired (except extra-large 500W products) and can only be treated with return/exchange.
05. Safe Setup: Add fuses to prevent short circuits; add diodes to prevent backflow and reverse connection; add overvoltage protection circuits.
06. Inductive Loads: For inductive loads (coils, magnetic valves, speakers) and motors, select a power supply that is 3-5 times the rated load power.
07. Special Loads: Use constant current for light bulbs, dedicated chargers for battery applications, and current-sharing models for parallel setups.
08. Non-Isolated Buck Risk: The worst consequence is that high input voltage passes directly to the output. Isolated designs are recommended for valuable loads.
09. Isolated Wiring: Negative poles of isolated products cannot be shared; input and output grounds must be separate.
10. High Voltage Difference: For input voltages that are three times or more than output, use isolated products for optimal safety.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between PWM and PFM control in DC/DC converters?
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control provides high efficiency along with excellent output voltage ripple and noise suppression under normal and heavy loads. PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) control offers the advantage of exceptionally low power consumption, making it ideal for devices operating under light loads or in standby mode for extended periods.
When should I choose an isolated DC-DC converter over a non-isolated one?
Isolated converters are highly recommended for precious or sensitive loads, and when the input voltage is three times (or more) higher than the output voltage. In non-isolated buck converters, a critical failure can cause the high input voltage to pass directly to the output and damage the load. Isolated converters prevent this by electrically separating the input and output circuits.
How do I select the right power rating for inductive loads or motor applications?
For inductive loads such as coils, speakers, magnetic valves, and electric motors, we recommend choosing a DC-DC converter rated for 3 to 5 times the nominal power of the load. This headroom accommodates the high starting current (inrush current) characteristic of inductive devices.
Why do step-up (boost) converters require external fuses?
Due to their specific circuit topologies, step-up series converters do not feature built-in output short-circuit protection or low-voltage shutoff. To protect your input power source and wiring from excessive current during a fault, it is essential to install an appropriately rated fuse at the input terminal.
Can isolated DC-DC converters share a common negative ground?
No, the negative poles (ground lines) of the input and output stages must remain completely separated. Sharing a negative pole between the input and output will bypass the electrical barrier, causing the converter to lose its isolation properties.
Does negative voltage input require specific wiring for isolated power supplies?
Yes. When using isolated power supplies with a negative voltage input, connect the 0V line to the red wire and the negative voltage line to the black wire. Always ensure proper polarity configurations based on the model guidelines.
