All buck-boost and step-up/step-down products come standard with output overcurrent protection, output short-circuit protection, input undervoltage protection, and chip overheating protection; (large power supply products have over-temperature protection on the circuit board or casing, generally with a protection temperature of around 90°C).

Due to circuit structure issues, step-up series products do not have output short-circuit protection and the function of shutting down without output under undervoltage. When using, please add appropriate fuses at the input end to prevent large currents from damaging the input power source during short circuits.

Therefore, when carrying precious load products, it is not recommended to use non-isolated buck power supplies, and isolated products are recommended.

The worst consequence of a non-isolated boost power supply is that a short circuit at the input end generates a large current that can burn the wiring. For high-power products, adding an appropriate fuse at the input end can prevent this. Generally, it is not recommended for customers to choose isolated boost converters.

The negative pole (ground) of isolated products cannot be shared; the negative poles of input and output must be used separately, otherwise, the isolation effect is lost.

The input voltage range of isolated power supplies is not as large as that of non-isolated power supplies. There are limitations and requirements for the input voltage range, and the adjustable range of the output voltage value is also smaller.

Isolated power supplies can support negative voltage input, and the output can be positive or negative voltage. When inputting a negative voltage, please note that the 0V line is connected to the red wire, and the negative voltage line is connected to the black wire.

The prototype production of isolated power supplies is very troublesome, not like non-isolated power supplies that can be modified by adjusting the voltage regulator. What is the main difference between isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters?
Isolated converters have no direct electrical path between input and output, which protects precious loads from potential high-voltage damage. Non-isolated converters are generally more compact and cost-effective but carry a risk of direct voltage pass-through in case of a component failure.
Why do step-up (boost) converters lack output short-circuit protection?
Due to basic circuit structure limitations, step-up topologies have a direct path from input to output via the boost diode and inductor. Therefore, they cannot shut down the output under a short-circuit condition. Adding a proper fuse at the input end is strongly recommended to protect your system.
How should I size a power supply for motor or inductive loads?
For inductive loads like motors, coils, magnetic valves, and speakers, the startup surge current is significantly higher than the running current. We highly recommend choosing a converter with a power capacity that is 3 to 5 times the rated power of your load.
